Crook County 911
About
Crook County 911 provides 24-hours telephone service to the public for information and for routine or emergency assistance in partnership with the Prineville Police Department, Crook County Sheriff’s Office and Crook County Fire and Rescue. Crook County 911 operates with the discretion of a user board consisting of these contract agencies.
We are a division of the Prineville Police Department and are also known as the Prineville Dispatch Center. In fact, you will commonly hear our staff answer the business line as “Prineville Dispatch.” We directly dispatch for law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services (EMS) in Crook County and work closely with other agencies such as the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center (COIDC), United States Forest Service (USFS), Oregon State Police (OSP) and other State and Federal entities.
Our Dispatch Center is the 911 answering point for all of Crook County, Oregon, which has a total area of 2,987 square miles and a total population of about 24,400. Prineville is the County Seat with a population of approximately 10,329.
Calls requiring assistance are entered into our computer aided dispatch (CAD) system and the appropriate field units are dispatched to emergency and non-emergency incidents. In 2019 we received a total of 59,279 phone calls requesting information or assistance, of those 9,422 were 911 calls. That’s an average of 162 calls per day. These calls resulted in 39,304 law enforcement incidents and 3,861 Fire and/or EMS incidents.
Not only do we answer the phone and dispatch responding agencies, but as an enhanced 911 facility, we also provide standards-based lifesaving public emergency care. All of our telecommunicators are Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certified through the International Academy of Emergency Dispatch (IAED), in addition to their Basic Telecommunication Certification, through the State of Oregon’s Department of Safety and Security Training (DPSST).

When calling 911 isn’t an option due to the nature of the emergency, such as a home invasion, robbery or an abusive partner, Text to 911 is an available tool to help get assistance. Simply open your cell phones messaging icon and enter 9 1 1 in the number field of the text message screen. “Callers” need to enter their location and type of emergency in the message field and one of our dispatchers will text back.
Important to know about Text to 911:
• Texting to 911 is intended to benefit people who may not be able to speak in an emergency. “Call if you can, Text if you can’t.”
• When texting to 911 for an emergency, the first message should be the location (address if possible) and the type of emergency help needed (police, fire or medical).
• Keep messages brief and concise; use full words.
• Stay with your phone and be prepared to answer questions and follow instructions from the 911 Dispatcher.
• Do not send photos, videos, or emoji’s as they will interfere with the Text to 911 system.
• Text to 911 is for emergencies only!
