City Attorney
The Office of City Attorney provides legal counsel to the City Council, the City Manager and other city officials. The office represents the city and officials in all litigation and controversies. Upon request, the office provides written legal opinions to city and officials. The office drafts and/or reviews all contracts, agreements, licenses, permits, deeds, leases, franchises and other legal documents to which the city is a party. In addition, the office handles all real estate transactions on behalf of the city, prepares deeds, examines titles and conducts closings, and collects debts owed to the City, such as taxes, water and sewer accounts, weed and demolition liens and damage to City property.
The Office of City Attorney is led by the city attorney who is appointed by and reports to City Council. The office also includes two legal secretaries and functions as a law firm for the city. Attorneys within the office maintain a diverse practice that includes litigation, trial and appellate, tort, contracts, real estate, land use, environmental, taxation, collections, labor relations, administrative and constitutional law. The City Attorney shall be the legal adviser to the city manager, the council, or any committee thereof, all official boards and commissions and all city officers and employees with respect to any legal question involving an official duty or any legal matter pertaining to the affairs of the City of Prineville.
The City Attorney shall advise the city council, the city manager and all the departments of the city concerning new or proposed state or federal legislation and to represent the city before all legislative bodies in matters affecting the city.
The City Attorney is Jered Reid. Jered is philosophically committed to the practice of preventive law on behalf of the City of Prineville. This practice requires that the office proactively address legal issues at their inceptual stage thereby avoiding costly, time-consuming and controversial litigation.
